Interiors // The Birth Poster
One of the fantastic things about Instagram is discovering new artists and creatives. Enter - The Birth Poster. The Birth Poster is a series of unique and timeless birth posters with illustrations that have been adapted to the child's actual size at birth (scale 1:1). The child's name, height, weight, date of birth and time of birth are printed at the bottom of the poster. And in any language.
I discovered this wonderful product from Sweden on Instagram and no sooner had I discovered them, I had plans for the posters in my own home - where I'd put them, what colour frame, ordering one for the baby that hasn't arrived yet (!). I can get a bit obsessive like that! Anything stylish and timeless for a child's room (or for the home) and you got my attention. Evelina from The Birth Poster tells us more...
Tell us about the brains behind The Birth Poster...
Myself, Evelina, and my fiancé Gustav run The Birth Poster. We live in Stockholm, Sweden and run the business from here. Our first poster was sold in August 2013 in Sweden. Our company name is Schmeck Studios and we have a studio in the city. Gustav and I have been together for four years and are getting married in Sicily this September!
Tell us about The Birth Poster, how it started and why?
I didn't like my previous job so I started to think about a change in career. One night Gustav (previously an Art Director in an advertising bureau in Stockholm) told me to try out that baby-idea he had (that the length of a newborn baby would fit on a poster). I started to illustrate babies for a few months and came up with Sketch #1. Meanwhile Gustav built a web shop and designed a web site. In August 2013 we launched the shop in Sweden. A year after we had four illustrations (Sketch #2, Continuous Line #1 and Continuous Line #2 added to the collection).
You live in Sweden, a country renowned for its clever design and Scandinavian aesthetic. Tell us a little about where you live and the influence it's had on your work/design.
We live in a concept apartment in Stockholm (http://biografen28.se/home). Our home is very important to us and is a big inspiration for our work. We always ask ourselves the question, would we have this poster/design in our home? If yes, we move further with the work. We share a big interest in design as many of us do and we love it!
The Birth Poster has had such a fantastic response on Instagram. How have you found the response and what seems to be the most popular poster?
We are so happy with the positive response on Instagram, it's so amazing that Instagram connects us all! In Sweden the most popular poster is Sketch #1 (I think that's because we only sold that one our first year). Abroad it's the Continuous Line illustrations that are the most popular.
I am lucky enough to have the Continuous Line #1 poster of my son, Max, and it's such a special keepsake. And now you have the opportunity to win one of these beauties for your own home! I have teamed up with The Birth Poster to offer one lucky person to win their very own poster! Winner gets to choose their own choice of poster, open worldwide. Woo hoo!
